The Gig Economy. No, we are not talking about music. The Gig Economy refers to the rise in the number of workers choosing to stay self-employed to effectively sample the variety of workplaces in their field of expertise. As policy makers, contract proposers and users rather than employers of these worker, who does the workplace evolve to cater to the needs of a growing number of people who simply do not want to commit themselves? A great example of how this has manifested itself is the plight of Uber and Deliveroo Workers; self-employed yet craving the security of conventional employment with paid holidays and guaranteed minimum working hours. With so many management teams viewing Gig work as simply contracting and lacking the commitment of permanent staff, will this new breed of employee stand the test of time? Perhaps it is us as HR Professionals that need to adjust how we view what an employee really is.
